Math:

Today was the last day we focused on Mathematical Properties including: Commutative, Associative, Identity, Distributive, and Inverse. We corrected the Whose Property? wkshts (3 worksheets).  They then worked with partners to continue practicing identifying and using the properties with a Properties Practice wksht and had answer keys to check their answers.  When they felt like they understood the Properties, they then completed a short Properties Review wksht that was set up similar to the quiz.  When finished, teacher corrected, and if they did well, they got to start the Properties Quiz.  If students did not finish any of the Practice or Review, it became homework and those students will Quiz first thing tomorrow in class.

Algebra: Today we focused on Translating Expressions.  We warmed-up with an Operation Clue Words Activity.  The students, in table groups, had about 5 minutes to match as many Clue words that they could to the correct Operational Word.  We followed up, by completing an Operational Clue Words Graphic Organizer that will be put into their Notebooks for future reference.  This word list will help students when solving word problems throughout the year.  We then, as a class, completed a Translating Words into Math wksht that helped students understand how to take a verbal phrase and identify the different parts to write an Expression.  The remaining of class, the students worked on 1.3 Translating Expressions wksht on their own or with partners.  Whatever they did not finish in class, is homework.

**Any students who did not perform well on the quiz (last Thurs) or the test, needs to see Mrs. Meyer ASAP so that we can discuss the next steps in order to improve the current scores!

We continued using the SB lesson from warm-up to review how to translate words into expressions and practiced together some examples as a class. We then worked through Translating Words into Math wksht.  2nd hour got a bit further and took a Quick Check to determine their current understanding and then the remaining of the hour, they worked on Lipstick Lady wksht.

Homework:  2nd hr:  Lipstick Lady wksht  4th hr:  NA

FYI-  Today I sent home a blue handout with the students on my Grading and Assessment for my math/algebra classes. Please use this guide when you are looking at Skyward to interpret the scores and especially how a Quick Check is to be interpreted.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to send me an email!  (I forgot to hand this out to 4th hour- they will get it tomorrow!  Sorry!)

Looking Ahead! **We will start reviewing for the 2nd District CBA during class/warm-ups to be given the around Oct. 19. ***WKCE Testing begins at the end of the month!!!!    Thursday: Translating Expressions Quiz.  Friday:  Math Properties

Algebra: Warm-up: Box-and-Whiskers Plot Group Activity.  (Assembled and created a Box and Whisker Plot given data/found the 5 number summary/identified outliers).

Today's lesson was to review Box Plots to prepare the students for the Quiz tomorrow.  Many students said that MagnaHigh really helped them understand the concepts better- AWESOME!  We handed back the Quick Check from Monday and corrected our work.  The remaining time, the students got to work on more Box Plot Practice 2 wksht.  They are encouraged to complete all four problems for homework, but the following site also had great practice on the "Construction" part of the Box and Whiskers Plot and will give instant feedback:  Box-and-Whiskers Smartboard Lesson

Homework:  Box and Whiskers Practice 2  Box and Whiskers Quiz (tomorrow)

Wednesday, Oct. 3

Math:  We talked about Mrs. Meyer's blog and found out some students had difficulties leaving a comment.  One mistake many students were making was when they were signing into their school google account they forgot the @stu after their name.  For example Joe Smith would type in smith.j@stu.janesville.k12.wi.us.  (Not a real site, I hope, do not click on Joe Smith please!)  I still had a few students who still had other obstacles trying to comment. I figured out the solution today during 4th hour, but it is a bit too complicated to write it all out (it does involve creating a blog account through Google).  I will walk through it tomorrow with 2nd hour and am willing to walk through it with individuals after school if they are interested. In the mean time, if they still cannot comment on the site, they can leave me an email letting me know that they have been there, but couldn't comment.  My email is tmeyer@janesville.k12.wi.us
EXTENSION!! Mrs. Meyer encourages all students to log-on to mrstmeyer.blogspot.com and to leave a comment so that she knows that you were able to see the site. Any student who replies will get a surprise tomorrow!

Since we just finished our Data Quiz yesterday, we went to MangaHigh today to practice Order of Operations and to check out the blog/troubleshoot.

FYI-I am finalizing my document for my grading policy and class procedures/routines. This should be handed out either tomorrow or early next week. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to send me an email!

Homework: Go to Mrs. Meyer's blog and comment. If students wish to work on the Data Displays 9.7 wksht, they may continue working on it.

Looking Ahead!   Thursday: We will be reviewing data displays and constructing our first enteries in our Interactive Notes Notebook. We will then start our lesson on Math Symbols and Translating Words into Expression. Friday: Field Trip

Today we will continued our lesson on Box and Whiskers.  We took a Quick Check to check our understanding at this point.  We rated the results on a 5-0 scale of understanding.  We then went over each of the 10 questions and had some great discussion on parts that were still confusing us.  We then handed back the Data Quiz and answered any questions that they had regarding their grades.  Retakes were offered to any student who wants to improve this score.  In order to retake, they must talk to the teacher and show them the quiz.  Then the teacher will decide what needs to be done to demonstrate understanding of the skills that were missed (can be anything from correcting mistakes, walking through the problem with the teacher, or additional problems).  After this, they can retake the quiz and that grade will replace the first one.

ABSENT STUDENTS:  Please see Mrs. Meyer ASAP to make up the Box and Whiskers Quick Check.

Monday, Oct 1

Math:  Today we reviewed Mean, Median, Mode, Range, and Best Measure of Center during warm-up.  A Appropriate Measures Warm-Up was handed out to practice one more time before the quiz tomorrow.  The back side had three additional problems that can be worked out for extra practice.  It is not required homework and the answers will be shown at the beginning of class tomorrow.

After warm-up, we walked through how to find Missing Data when given the mean.  Together we completed problems 1 and 2 on the back side of the Data wksht from last week and then independently worked on problems 3 and 4. (Click here to get Missing Data Notes!) We went over the answers together and answered questions.  If students had time, they could attempt the two Median problems #5 and 6 at the bottom of the page. (The quiz will not have these type of problems.)

Homework:  Find the Missing Mean wksht (4 problems/half sheet)
                     Measures of Center Quiz Tomorrow
